34
1979 Field Data Summary
The data needed considerable organization at the end of the season.
Considerablejeffort was spent to reorganize the data into a meaningful
format so it could be placed into the MANAGE data base (the MANAGE Data
sets were not worked out until after the sampling season). Next season
data will be collected in a manner that will simplify entry into the
MANAGE system.
A total of24 intensive 0.5 mile sample stations, and 10 electrofishing
stations were sampled under the systematic sampling program in 1979.
Table 6 presents a list of all fishes captured b?,, strata. During 1979,
20 different species were collected.
At Stratum B (Gunnison Butte to Labyrinth Canyon), seine collections
were made during three time periods: 1900-0100, 0100-1300 and 13004900---
hours. These collections were made in an effort to determine if sampling
should be conducted between 0100-0700 hours. Figure 6 illustrates the------
extreme fluctuations in catch per unit of effort for the most common-
fish species, red shiners. Catch rates for red shiners were lowest
between 0100-0700. In addition, a chi-square analysis indicated there
were no significant differences (95% level) in the number of species
collected when the three time periods were compared.
Because of the generally high level of variance associated with seine
catches and lack of indication that the time period 0100-0700 was different
in catches of fishes, we decided it was not necessary to treat time
periods differently for seine catches, and would exclude the 0100-0700
period from the diurnal sampling time frame.
