<br />We are not going to run out <br />of water, but we are going <br />to have to take better care <br />of what we have. We have a <br />long way to go to achieve a <br />sound water management <br />philosophy that will permit <br />needs to be met in the <br />future. <br /> <br />. . . and Where We're Going <br /> <br />The sun, however, is beginning to shine in some places. Public understanding <br />of the problem is growing. The tools available for solving problems are being <br />improved. Decreasing availability of federal funds is forcing decisions on local <br />water problems to be made by state and local agencies. Nearer to the problem, <br />these agencies should be able to develop more cost-effective and efficient <br />solutions. Above all, the nation is richly endowed with water resources, <br /> <br />We are not going to run out of water, but we are going to have to take better <br />care of what we have. We have a long way to go to achieve a sound water <br />management philosophy that will permit needs to be met in the future. The <br />National Water Commission pointed the way in 1973.
