Establish hatchery, <br /> and wild populations <br /> of pure (Type A) greenback <br />cutthroat trout for broodstock. <br /> Efforts will be pursued to <br />' establish greenback trout <br />populations in captivity and <br /> to identify wild greenback <br /> populations that can be used <br />' as broodstock to support the <br />establishment of additional <br /> greenback populations within <br /> the subspecies' historic range. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />3.1 Establish a South Platte River wild broodstock. Establish/maintain <br />at least one lake/stream environment within the South Platte River <br />drainage to function as a wild broodstock source. These broodstocks <br />can also constitute one or more of the 20 stable populations under <br />Task 2.0. This Task has been completed; wild greenback populations <br />in Como Creek, Hunters Creek, Bear Lake and Upper Hutcheson Lake are <br />identified as suitable egg sources. <br />3.2 Establish an Arkansas River wild broodstock. Establish one <br />lake/stream environment within the Arkansas River drainage to <br />function as a practical wild broodstock source. This broodstock may <br />constitute one or more of the 20 stable populations under Task 2.0. <br />This task has been completed. Eggs have been collected from Lytle <br />Pond on Ft. Carson and from South Apache Creek in 1992. Boehmer <br />Reservoir and Native Lake also have the potential to serve as <br />broodstock areas, as well as the historic populations in Cascade <br />Creek. <br />3.3 Establish captive broodstocks. Establish and demonstrate the <br />successful use of a hatchery propagation program at the USFWS, <br />Bozeman Fish Technology Center, (FTC) Bozeman, Montana, using pure <br />(type A) greenback cutthroat trout. Movement of greenback fry and <br />milt between Bozeman FTC and restoration sites in Colorado will be <br />done in accordance with current State and Federal fish disease <br />policies and good fisheries management practices. Use greenback fry <br />from this source to reintroduce greenbacks into candidate habitats <br />as outlined in Task 2.4. In addition to the Bozeman program, <br />another successful hatchery program was demonstrated at the Saratoga <br />NFH in Wyoming. Both of these greenback hatchery programs ended in <br />1992. A hatchery program at the CDOW Experimental Hatchery was <br />initiated in 1989. <br />3.31 Collect and utilize milt from wild populations. Collect and <br />utilize milt from wild populations of pure (Type A) greenbacks <br />for fertilization of hatchery ova to minimize genetic drift <br />within the hatchery.
