1 5. Mammals
' Several mammal species have been observed
Preserve and are listed below. No known
have been undertaken within the Preserve.
' Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus)
Coyote (Canus latrans)
Beaver (Castor canadensis)
' Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)
Rock squirrel (Citellus variegatus)
Bats, unknown species

within the
surveys of mammals
Conclusion: Beaver dam activity may pose a problem with any
development of water control structures.
6. Endangered Species
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is listed as
a USFWS endangered species. Bald eagles have.been
observed within the Preserve, but no known nest sites
exist. More information.is needed on use of the site
by bald eagles.
The peregrine falcon (Falso peregrinus) is listed as a
USFWS endangered species. Peregrine falcons nest in
the cliff area above the Colorado River near the
southeast corner of the Preserve. Nest sites are not
occupied every year. (More information is needed from
Nelson on peregrine activities in the Preserve.)
No other endangered species are known to potentially
occur in the Preserve.
Conclusion: There are no anticipated impacts to bald eagles
or peregrine falcons by razorback sucker habitat enhancement
activities. It is hoped that enhancement of razorback
sucker habitat will benefit other endangered fish including
bonytail chubs, Colorado squawfish, and humpback chubs.

1

III. CONCEPTUAL ECOLOGICAL MODEL
Generally, the input of terrestrial organic matter provides the
basis for energy in headwater streams (Vannote et al. 1980).
Large rivers, such as those of the upper basin, depend upon fine
particulate organic matter from upstream reaches for basic
productivity (Vannote et al. 1980; Sedell and Richey 1989).
Although detailed ecological studies of the various habitats in
the upper basin have not been made, inferences can be drawn from
the published literature.
24
