(3.1) Information pamphlets.
The Team recommends that an information pamphlet be prepared
describing the woundfin and explaining some of its biology.
The pamphlet should also describe the Virgin River and its impor-
tance to the woundfin and other fish and wildlife dependent upon
it. A section giving reasons for preserving species will also
be included. Two thousand dollars is recommended for production
of the pamphlet.
(3.2) Motion picture.
Along with the pamphlet, the Team is recommending a short film
(15-20 minutes) be prepared on the Virgin River ecosystem. This
film should present a view of the ecosystem as a whole, in which
the woundfin is an integral part and not a special animal separate
from the rest. The film is estimated to cost $20,000.
(4.0) Enforce state and federal laws protecting woundfin populations
and habitat.
Woundfin are protected by the Department of Interior and the
States of Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Agencies or groups which
have projects on the Virgin River now or which are proposing
projects should be conferred with and informed of the status of
the woundfin and woundfin habitat so that no unintentional
infractions of laws or no inadvertent destruction of fish or
habitat occurs. Section 7 consultation requirements must be
pointed out to all federal agencies supporting projects which
may impact the species or its habitat. Protection of the species
and its habitat should be a joint responsibility between the U. S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and participating state agencies.
23
