30
• Tyus and Karp (1989) reported that fast daily flow fluctuations may
strand fishes (especially young of year) in backwaters, thus exposing
them to terrestrial predation and increased competition.
Maddux et al. (1987) found daily flow changes below Glenn Canyon Dam
stranded many species including humpback chub. Over 800 rainbow
trout were stranded in one 7-mile-long study area, nearly all were mature
fish presumably spawning over a cobble bar. Egg desiccation on
exposed bars is also a potential problem.
Humpback chub
o High peak flows in the Yampa River maximize eddy habitat critical to survival
• of humpback chub larvae and adults.
Tyus and Karp (1989) reported eddy habitat to be utilized by adult and
larval humpback chub in the Yampa River. A positive relationship
between flow and eddy area was reported.
Bonytail chub
o A natural flow regime may be necessary for bonytail chub reproduction.
Holden (1980a) reported bonytail chub reproduction in the Green River
just below Flaming Gorge Dam ceased while the reservoir was filling.
0
