23
Vanicek and Kramer (1969), Tyus and McAda (1984), Haynes et al.
(1984 1985), and Haynes and Muth (1984, 1985a, b) have also reported •
Colorado squawfish spawning to occur when flows are declining toward
baseflow.
Holden and Selby (1978), Seethaler (1978, 1980), and Lamarra et al.
(1985) provide additional information on spawning cues.
o Flow spikes may be an important spawning cue for Colorado squawfish.
Nesler et al. (1988) reported a correlation between estimated Colorado
squawfish spawning and the first major flow spike occurring near base
flow. Due to the few years (4) of data available and possible sampling
differences among years, they recommended further study before
definitive conclusions are drawn about the relationship of flow spikes to •
Colorado squawfish spawning.
o Surface and/or groundwater inflows may be important to Colorado squawfish
homing behavior.
Tyus and Karp (1989) reported possible orientation of Colorado
squawfish to groundwater inflow from specific lithologic units with
potentially unique physiochemical properties. Homing to surface waters
from flooded lands, also possessing unique physiochemical properties
was also hypothesized. They reported a need to protect such ground
and surface water flows to ensure continued homing potential for the
species.
0
