15
is channel habitat after adequate lab and field testing has been conducted. Native
fish stocking involves the evaluation of hatchery stock suitability for aiding in
recovery of the wild population, and subsequent stocking if results are favorable.
Bonytail chub were to be immediately released into the wild due to their low
numbers, and habitat needs assessed after release. Introduced species are to be
managed to minimize negative interactions with the rare fishes, and new
introductions are to be controlled.
Research is to be continued to build knowledge regarding the rare fishes.
Success of different aspects of the program, as well as outside influences, are to
be assessed by a Standardized Monitoring Program.
Specific goals for each species are:
• 1. Colorado squawfish: "Maintain and protect self-sustaining populations
and natural habitat."
2. Humpback chub: "Maintain or establish and protect five self-sustaining
populations, natural habitat, and two refugia."
3. Bonytail chub: "Prevent immediate extinction; establish and protect six
self-sustaining populations and natural habitat."
4. Razorback sucker: "Establish and protect self-sustaining populations and
natural habitat."
Funding for the Program is a cooperative effort involving the states of
Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Bureau
of Reclamation, power companies, water users, and private donations.
40
