9
• Bibliographies which cover much of the body of literature pertaining to the rare
fishes include: Wydoski et al. (1980), Ecology Consultants (1977,1978).
The Colorado River Fisheries Project is a major effort to help in the recovery
of the rare fishes. Literature describing the project is summarized in Wydoski and
Hamill (1989). Literature pertaining to the Recovery Implementation Program is
cited in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1987b) and Wydoski and Hamill (1989).
Generally speaking, research efforts started with reconnaissance, then life
history studies and project impact analysis came to the forefront. Now monitoring
and modeling studies are being conducted to enable recovery of rare fishes while
allowing water development to occur.
Several studies have been conducted to ascertain the role of fish culture in
• the recovery of the rare fishes (Valentine 1983, Valdez 1985, Rinne et al. 1986).
Culture techniques have been developed for native and rare species by Jensen (no
date, 1983, 1986), Harriman (1981a, b, 1982a, b, c, 1985, 1987), Muth et al. (1985),
and Inslie (1981, 1982a, b).
EXISTING AND PROPOSED WATER PROJECTS
The large water development projects in the Upper Basin are part of the
Colorado River Storage Project created by the Colorado River Storage Act in the
early 1960's. The largest projects and their maximum live storage capacities are as
follows:
0
