Other small datasets \Ere secured by BIOft'EST at
the direction of FWS. The only datasets that could not be entered into the
da'tahase \Ere the collections of Wick and Stonel:nrner, 1984 (studies with
radiotagged Colorado squawtish in the Yam:rs River) and those of Haynes,
1982-1985 (larval and yay collections in the lO\Er Yam:rs River). The former
data were not available, and refonnatting the dual-file data of the latter set
into a can:rstible fonnat was beyond the scope of this project.

Generally, data provided by FWS ~re stored in variations of one of three
b:isic formats, identified as CATCH, RARE, and RADIO. Data in C~/DATABASE \\ere
consistently stored wi thin one of these three formats, l:ut other data provided
l:7{ FWS \\ere in many variations of these formats. The CATCH format contained
data on all species of fish captured, including the rare fish; RARE format
contained data on only the individual juvenile and adult rare fish; and RADIO
fonnat contained ra:Uotelemetry data on adults. For Task A, BIO/WEST used
primarily the CATCH and RADIO formats for the data summaries.

Folla4ing Workshop #1, it was determined that all three data fonnats
should be used. SO, in preparation for Workshop #2, data in CATCH were used
to provide canplete documentation of the dat:aset (i. e., dates, times, sample
locations), and habitat parameters for all endangered fish less than 60 mm
total length. Records in RARE provided the habitat data (depth, velocity,
substrate) associated with each endangered fish 60 mm or longer. All of the
data in RADIO type files ~re used since these data \Ere unique fran any
contained in CATCH or RARE files.

During Task. A and follcwing Task. B of this project, BIO/WEST fou.'1d. a
llUl'ltler of errors or problems with the database received fran FWS. W:! main-
tained contact with the FWS datatase managers to correct these problems and
insure consistency in changes and corrections. Problems included conflicting
length definitions for various life stages, especially "larvae"; discrepancies
bet\Een. total numbers of fish collected and nunbers by age category; inconsis-
tent set of codes for missing data; and use of different fieldnames for the
same parameter. Since many of the w:>rkshop participmts collected the data, it
was inperative that errors or apparent inaccuracies were identified.

Objective 2: Dat:aset SUmmaries

Methods. All data assimila'ted under Objective 1 ~re associated with
study descriptions provided 1:rf FWS and retrieved through research of the
litera ture . The. nuntler of target fishes contained in each dataset \Ere
identified bv age group, and related in tabular form to a brief narrative
describing the study objectives, methodologies, collection sites, dates, and
gear types. These narratives ~re provided to all project particip1nts prior
to W)rkshop #1 to familiarize everyone with the nature of the datal:ase.

Results. A total of 86 datafiles were identified in FWS/DATABASE (Table
A-I) . These \Ere described in narratives appended to the Task A package sent
to project pn'ticipants on December 12, 1986. Table A-I provides a directory of
the datafiles and the narratives present a quic-..k Sl.D1lIDa.ry of the type of study
that was conducted and the data generated. These narratives were desigied to

4
