were moved from this section to an area 2.1 miles downstream (4.9
miles downstream of Paiute Farms) where the water was considerably
clearer, reservoir banks were gradual and the narrow canyon gave
way to shallow bays and cobble/boulder points.- Netting efforts
concentrated along the south shore. Thirteen of the 14 razorbacks
captured in the San Juan arm were captured in this area in net sets
within 0.2 miles of each other (T 41 S, R 13 E, Section 5, Lat. 37°
15' 35", Long. 110° 29' 50") One other razorback was captured
approximately 2 miles downstream of the other capture locations (T
41 S, R 13 E, Section 7, Lat. 37° 13' 50",-long. 110° 31' 15").
Dirty Devil Arm
Four razorbacks were captured along the northwest shore of Lake
Powell 0.8 miles downstream of the mouth of the Dirty Devil arm.
Two males were captured with electrofishing gear and one of each
sex was captured in trammel nets. None showed signs of previous
capture (no tags) and all were successfully transported to Ouray
(Table 1).
Netting commenced in the Dirty Devil arm of Lake Powell on April
8, 1990 and terminated during the evening of April il. A total of
294.4 net hours were expended in this vicinity. Upstream travel in
the Dirty Devil arm was possible to the oxbow 2 miles upstream of
the highway 95 bridge. Nets were set in the shallow, silty inflow
area just downstream of the oxbow as well as directly in the oxbow.
No razorback suckers were captured in this area and netting efforts
were gradually shifted downstream. Little habitat similar to San
Juan capture sites existed anywhere in the Dirty Devil arm and no
razorbacks were captured there despite considerable effort.
Electrofishing efforts covered the entire shoreline of the
reservoir from the Hite boat ramp north and east to the highway 95
bridge (crossing the Colorado River arm), back west to the Dirty
Devil, both shores of the 4.4 miles of accessible Dirty Devil arm
and along one mile of the northwest shoreline of Lake Powell
downstream of the Dirty Devil mouth.
Razorback suckers were captured during the final .evening of
sampling in and just southwest of a cove immediately south of
Highway 95, 0.8 miles west of the mouth of the Dirty Devil arm
a1on~ the northwest shore of the reservoir (T 33 S, R 14 E, lat.
370 5 oe~~, tonp. ~~0O 24' 35") . Fish were taken 5 to 20 feet from shore
from 17 to 20 °C water 2 to 6 feet deep over rocky substrate
consisting of a mixture of cobble, rubble and gravel in a silty
matrix. Macrohabitat consisted of gently sloping shorelines near
the cove mouth. The area of capture was well away from any inflow
influence. Wave action over shallow water increased turbidity
relative to mid reservoir areas.
