S
Results and Discussion
A summary of the analysis results is contained in Table 2. The level of
detection for toxaohene was 1 ppm, and there was none detected in any of the
fish. The average total organochlorine concentration among all 59 fish was
0.21 ppm. The highest total organochlorine residue concentration, 1.22 ppm,
occurred in a round-tailed chub from Lewis Creek (#92). The second highest
fish was a flannelmouth sucker from East Reed Wash with 0.69 ppm total
organochlorine residue. Fish from Lewis Creek, East Reed Wash, and Peck and
Beede Wash had the highest average concentrations of organochlorine residues
as well as the greatest variation between fish.
High toxaohene residue levels had been found in fish from Peck and Beede and
Reed Washes in 1982. Analysis of fish viscera composite samples gave the
following toxaphene levels:
0.2 ppm (Mackwash below Highline Reservoir; white sucker, flannel-
mouth sucker, green sunfish)
61.5 ppm (Reedwash at N Road; roundtail chub)
9.9 ppm (Peck and Beede Wash at 14 and 0 1/2 Roads; flannelmouth
sucker)
6.4 pom (East Reedwash at Kiefer Canal; roundtail chub, black
bullhead)
Sampling, preparation, and laboratory procedure details are not available for
the 1982 work. The number of fish in each sample, their lengths and weights,
and details of the laboratory procedures-and standards are not given in the
laboratory report.
The high levels of toxaohene in the 1982 samples prompted a similar round of
sampling in 1983. In 1983. however, the analyses for toxaphene were done by
the Colorado Department of Health using samples of muscle tissue from
individual fish:
.19 ppm (East Reed Wash at Kiefer Canal; channel catfish - 478 mm,
2 lbs. 1 oz.)
.19 ppm (Reed Wash at 13 and 0 Roads; flannelmouth sucker - 354
mm, 12.8 oz.)
.05 ppm (Mack Wash below Highline Reservoir; rainbow trout - 237 mm,
5 oz.)
.02 ppm (Mack Wash below Highline Reservoir; rainbow trout -
255 mm, 5 oz.) i
.84 ppm (Peck and Beede Wash; flannelmouth sucker - 410 mm, 12 oz.)
.28 ppm (Reed Wash at 13 and 0 Roads: flannelmouth sucker - 329 mm,
11.2 oz.)
9
