conditions on the Colorado River before operation
of a potash complex. An ecosystem approach to
the analysis reveals that the lower Colorado
River is a detritus based food source. Primary
production is low because turbidity precludes
photosynthesis of benthic periphyton. Shifting
substrates also inhibit production by primary
source and footed vegetation. Water quality
analyses shows that dissolved oxygen, pH, are
not subject to wide variation, but turbidity,
TDS, and flow vary seasonally and with local
weather conditions. Fish collections revealed
the threatened and endangered humpback sucker
(Xyrauchen texanus), bony tail chub (Gila
robusta), and squawfish (Ptychocheilus lucius).
148.
