Several environmental factors were examined in
stream surveys on six Yellowstone Lake tributaries
used by cutthroat trout for spawning. An
attempt was made to relate the distribution of
redds in each stream with factors known sometimes
to influence the choice of spawning sites. The
distribution of gravel and the presence of
waterfalls, log jams, and chemical barriers can
account for the distribution of nests in most
of the streams. No explanation is at hand, due
to limited knowledge, to reveal why more spawning
did not take place in upstream areas in Chipmunk
Creek; the spawners shunned what seemed to be
ideal spawning territory in the middle stretches
and used the lower sections. The influence of
forest cover and stream gradient on distribution
of spawning in the streams was studied, but no
effects were apparent.

of the Fisheries Research-Section for the

Research activities include better use of
hatchery products, continuing reservoir manage-
ment studies, stream habitat evaluations, heavy
metal pollutant effects, food-chain augmentation,
and environmental problems. The document
includes abstracts of theses in preparation, a
list of technical papers, and research project
reports.
