Such <br />land uses as logging and road construction, <br />grazing, and recreation are considered. Proceedings Utah <br />Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters <br />33:113-118. <br />Migrating cutthroat trout spawners (Salmo <br />clarki lewisi) in Arnica Creek, Yellowstone <br />National Park, were counted day and night in <br />1951. Five sixths of the total count for the <br />season entered the stream between 6 p.m. and 7- <br />8 a.m. This nocturnal migration is unusual for <br />salmonid spawners, and is explained by the <br />response of spawners to evening freshets that <br />occur during the season of melting snows. <br />Lakeward-migrating cutthroat fry in the same <br />stream were counted, and it was found that 88 <br />percent of the total count from August 1 to 15 <br />moved downstream at night. Nocturnal movements <br />of fry have been observed in other trouts and <br />in salmon, and have been attributed to a negative <br />phototropism. <br />109. Cope, 0. B. 1957.
