The principal fishery in the upper Green River
was trout and was valued at $12,180 per mile.
Harvest was by both residents and nonresidents
and average 0.72 fisherman per mile per day.
Moose, antelope, sheep, deer, and elk were
harvested by hunters. Harvest in the Green
River Basin comprised 28% of the moose, 4% of
the antelope, 11% of the mountain sheep, 8% of
the elk, and 4% of the deer harvested within
the state. Reservoir development was concluded
to pose positive impacts for aquatic organisms
but would have a significant negative impact on
stream fisheries. Negative impacts-were forseen
for game animals.
57. Binns, N. A. 1976. Colorado river cutthroat ENDANG. FISH
trout--slowing the slide to extinction. MANAGEMENT
Proceedings Western Association State Game HABITAT ALT.
and Fish Commissioners 56:282-283. GREEN R.
5
The Colorado River cutthroat trout (Salmo
clarki pleuriticus) is the native trout of
Wyoming's Green River drainage. Hybridization
and competition with introduced rainbow trout
and other cutthroat trout strains, as well as
habitat changes associated with man's timbering,
livestock, irrigation and oil operations, have
eliminated this trout to a handful of streams.
A variety of measures have been used to aid
this trout. Stocks in several streams have
been isolated by fish barriers, limiting
hybridization of exotic trout. Habitat improve-
ment, and transplants are being planned.
Although not presently endangered to the extent
of warranting placement on the threatened or
rare and endangered species list, its situation
is precarious.
58.
