-I7-
Algae found at this station was Cladophora sp. ~•:~st at`ter t?:e initial
run-off, or low land run-off, this algae was very noticeable on t~~.e strea~zz
bottom, The large later run-off fror± the high country sperms t:^ ~?epre.ss
growths or further development of this algae.
The bottom type at this station was gravel from 1 to 3 i.n::hey i.L_ dia-
meter. The stream bed, towards the center, was a rni.~ct°zr? ~~f gravel ar.=.d
flat sheets of sandstone. The sandstone was apparentl;> bedroc~e. A Sayer
of silt was found at this station during all sampling periods.
Diatom growth appeared to be less at this station than those stations
previously described. Diatoms found were preuominately TabPll.a.ria~ bavicula,
Cymbel3a a*ad Cocconeis placentula. Occasional ~rosig~rda were fc~;~rr.~
Zooplankton populations averaged .3S organisms par Liter at this statioY+.
This is a reduction froze concentrations at other stations.
Bottom fauna was essen+_ially the same as Station ~;o. 3 exc^?pt ~cr an
increase in the number of Annelids.
Coliform counts increased noticeably at this station. mhis increase
is due, undoubtedly, to housing along the river 'bank above and belc~ra +~he
Highway 30 Bridge, Of two plate counts *_aken in R~ovemiaer~ l95$, az?.e piste
developed 15 colonies per cc., and the other 12 colonies per cc. Phis con-
centration is below the recozzrnended counts for game. fish waters.
The area between Stations PTO. 4 and ~?o. 5 eraca.oses the: town of Creen
River. These stations, approximately 7 miles apart, were established in
an attempt to determine the amount of pollution entering at Creen River
and Bitter Creek, The town of Creen River, with a pop~alatio*? =sf approxi-
mately 4,500, has no sewage disposal system at the present tiza;~. Raw sewage
is dumped dire^tly into the river. Tentative plans cal'd. f^r the constr~:ction
of a sewage lagoon southeast of the Lawn. ~Unfortunae.ly, the site selected
for this lagoon was within th.e "take line" of the Bureau of Recaamati.Tn°s
survey of lands to be withdrawn for the Flaming CorKe Reserv:~ir. Steps are
being taken to have this land released for sewage iagoo~ coastruct.i~~n.
Dzaring past years, large ama4znts of oils were released into the river
by the U. P. Railroad at Creen. River. Installation of an ±,il se.paratio:t
plant has greatly reduced *his sourc? of pollution. `he plant processes
from three to four thousand gallons of waste water per day. 'she was~tp. oil
is pu-aped into a tame truck for disposal, and the water is :returned to the
stream. Spills from this plant are rare but do occur. Occasional:ry effluent
from the reundhousQ is in volumes that cannot be handled by the scavP::ging
pumps. Duri.n.g these periods, the effluent escapes thro-sgh as overflow liras
into the river. The photo on the following page was taken ~~f this separation
plant. The sumps in the foreground contain effluent fr~iz& t?~e ro°~ndhouse.
The truck, upper left, is used to haul spearated ail from the plant.
