-37-
this secondary impact, it is believed that the remaining sagebrush
will have a much lower carrying capacity per unit area than under
~ "without the project" conditions.
To date, wildlife managers have not developed methods to improve
~ critical winter habitat for sage grouse. Consequently, the loss
of 4,80.0 birds--approximately 7 percent of Colorado's sage grouse
population will be an irretrievable impact resulting from construction
~ of the Savery-Pot Hook Project. In addition, the estimated 1,600
sage grouse inhabiting project lands in Wyoming will be lost.
i
CONCLUSIONS
The Fish and ,Wildlife Service, in cooperation with the Wyoming Game
and Fish Department and the Colorado Division of Wildlife, has
reviewed the impacts that construction of the Savery-Pot Hook
Project will have on fish and wildlife resources and has arrived
at the following conclusions:
1. The project may jeopardize the continued existence
of the Colorado River squawfish and humpback chub
~ --both endangered species of fish--in downstream
reaches of the Little Snake and Yampa Rivers.
