-29-

i
classify the razorback sucker and the bonytail chuh have been made.
Although little is known about the specific water quality requirements
for the full life cycles of these fishes, the Service is concerned
that changes in flow regime, salinity, turbidity, temperature,
and competition from other species may adversely affect their
already precarious welfare.
With particular respect to salinity, as expressed in terms of total
S dissolved solids (TDS), it is recognized that adults of the four
endemic species occur and can survive where salinities are much
Higher than will occur in the Yampa River--even if the Savery-Pot
~ Hook Project is constructed. However, the scarcity of young fish
in these other parts- of the Colorado system appears to indicate

that the survival of young is being affected.
Recent studies have established that curtailment of reproduction
due to habitat changes is the cause for the reduction in numbers
of these four fishes. It is suspected that one of the main problems
is changes in water quality as reflected in the balance among the
specific ions that together contribute to the total dissolved solids.
~ Larval and juvenile fish, in general, can have their osmo-regulatory
processes adversely affected by changes in the relative level of

specific ions such as sodium, potassium, and chloride. It is also
