Fish do WildliPe:Service
ArnNC nss~,s rte:
From: Area Director
Subject: Draft o! Humpback Chub Recovery Plan
The subject plan has been reviewed and the Following comments are
submitted:
1. The discussion does not attribute arm particular value to the
g_1 Humpback Chub which should be essential fora cost analysis.
2. The plan discusses the development oP suitable habitat. It also
F-2 states that a possible reason Por the decline oP the Chub popu-
lation is the co~upetition or predation by exotic fish species.
Presumably these exotic species will still be present unless
it is panned to eradicate them.
3. 4he 5-year cost is projected at $1,410,000 of tax monies, an
F-3 amount that appears excessive for the propagation oP a fish
species oP doubttlil value.
The Pads received by the BIA Par the Navaho Area are dust adequate
to cover the present operat3.ng program. In view oP Funds limitation,
the Navaho Area would not be in a position to participate in the Hump-
back Chub Recovery P3an. Further, iP the development oP suitable
F-4 habitats to re-introduce the Chub includes the river below the dam,
1t could possibly have an adverse affect on the development oP the
Navaho Indian Irrigation pro3ect putting us into an untenable position
With the Nava3o people. ~~~
....•
. ~,•.
~~ ~ F~
e~~~ . , ~ ' AUG2 31978 'r.:~ "
2~ .;`u.. .... v..~ l v ~ f~
.~..
