253. Implement at lenat LivM habi*at tilana by delegating '
responaibilitiaa to land and aster management aSencins.
Habitat management schemes will require multi-agency cdopera-
tion and funding. Specific responsibilities will be allo-
cated in proportion to their role is m,aaagiag land or
water in each geographic area selected for humpback chub
restoration. -
3. Establish a lox -term h back chub and a short-term b tail and
roundtail chub ca tive ro a ation ro ram to su 1 fish for scientific
studies and reintroductioas, and to o ulate refu ia.
humpback chub populations
Under present environmental conditions,
seem likely to continue to decline even if certain management options
are successful. The paucity of -successful reproduction seems to be
as important weak link in the chain of events endangering humpback
chubs. If certain wild populations became extirpated, they could be
re-established with captive-reared humpback chubs if reasons for
extirpation in that area were eliminated. Hatchery culture will also
supply specimens of knows ancestry to clarify taxonomic variability
and relationships among and within the Gila robusta complex; Further
examination and description of related species and their knows hybrids
will enable investigators to accurately identify all life stages of
attic species. The hatchery program will be
humpback chub sad symp
limited to species of the-Gila robusta complex sad Gila River b10 000 ~-
31. Unless natural warm water is
available (5S =70') it will be necessary to use recirculation
systems, biological filters, and water heaters to achieve proper
spawning and growth temperatures.
20
