Definition of Terms <br />Life history terms <br />Adult A fish capable of reproduction. <br />Juvenile Fish from year old up to but not including <br />adults (synonyms: immatures and subadults). <br />Postlarva Fish with yolk sac absorbed, and loss of <br />larval and gain of adult appearance. <br />Young-of-year Fish up to one year of age. <br />Bioassay terms <br />LC50 Median lethal concentration that kills 50X <br />of test fish. <br />Specific Electrical conductivity of water measured in <br />Conductance Micromhos per centimeter and corrected to 25°c. <br />Braiding Multiple side channels that appear to be <br />intertwined. <br />Hydrologic station Area where physical habitat simulation <br />measurements made. <br />RM River mile from mouth of river. <br />Stratum Geomorphologically homogeneous section of <br />river selected for random statistical sampling <br />of fishes (see 1979 Annual Report). <br />Travertine CaCO deposited from lime rich springs super- <br />saturated with C02. <br />Habitat Lypes <br />Backwater A body of water off the main channel with no <br />measureable velocity; often created by a drop <br />in water level which stops the flow through a <br />former side channel or low-lying area. <br />Eddy A portion of the stream with a distinct <br />whirlpool effect. <br />Intermittent Small, natural, usually ephemeral stream that <br />tributary enters river. <br />
