Presumably, the Rocky
Mountain Region of the National Park Service will spearhead this
agency's participation in the recovery program because of the
reported populations of Colorado squawfish in Dinosaur National
Monument and Canyonlands National Park.
' Interest by this Region lies in determining the possibility that
this fish may still occur within Grand Canyon National Park and
Lake Mead National Recreation Area. We note the Recovery Team's
recommendation on the third page of the plan's appendix to include
sites in these National Park Service areas of the Western Region
as potential critical habitat for the species. We will definitely
wish to address such a proposal if it becomes a formal recommendation.
These areas have a number of natural resources management and
research projects scheduled for FY 1978, but planned programs at
present exclude actions proposed in the Colorado Squawfish Recovery
1 Plan. However, by copy of this memorandum and of the plan we are
asking the Superintendents of these areas to evaluate the proposed
program and indicate to us if they can realistically participate

United States Department of the Interior
