BOX 11568 <br />SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 84147 <br />J <br />,~ C ~ 2 i'77 <br />To: Area Manager, Fish and Wildlife Service, Room 1422, <br />Federal Building, 125 South State Street, Salt Lake <br />City, Utah 84138 <br />From: Regional Director, Salt Lake City, Utah <br />Subject:_ Draft Colorado Squawfish Recovery Plan <br />In accordance with ,your memorandum of August 19, 1977, representatives <br />of the Upper and Lower Colorado Regions of the Bureau of Reclamation <br />have reviewed the draft of the Colorado Squawfish Recovery Plan and <br />offer-the following comments for your consideration: <br />General Comments <br />A map showing the rivers. discussed and range of the Colorado <br />squawfish would be very helpful. <br />The Bureau is presently negotiating a contract with the Museum <br />of Northern Arizona to sample the Grand Canyon between Glen <br />Canyon Dam and Lake Mead, The information gathered will be <br />incorporated into the fishery section of the Comprehensive <br />Environmental Statement (CES) for the Colorado River Basin. <br />The information will be made available to the recovery team <br />upon completion of the study. <br />Specific Comments <br />Introduction Section - "Reasons for Decline" -The narrative <br />goes into great detail and length describing the effects of <br />J-1 impoundments; however, little is said about the effects of <br />introduced species. Impacts arise in the form of both pre- <br />dation and direct competition, a perfect example of which can <br />be observed on the lower San Juan River and in many other areas <br />throughout the Colorado River system.
