3
METHODS
Sampling Sites
The study area consisted of the Yampa and Colorado rivers
(Figures 1 and 2). In 1983, the Colorado and Yampa rivers were
sampled. In 1984, special sites along the Yampa River were sampled
and, in addition, habitat measurements were taken.
On August 22-28, 1983, standardized (systematic) sampling was
conducted along the Colorado River from Grand Junction (Fifth
Street Bridge) to Loma, Colorado [river mile (RMI) 170-1501
(Table 1). The Yampa River was sampled on October 5-7 at special
sites established in previous years. Sites sampled in 1983 were
Juniper Springs (RMI 90.5-93.5), Maybell (RMI 76-79), Sunbeam
(RMI 71-73), and Lilly Park (RMI 52-53).
In 1984, no sampling was conducted during runoff due to record
high flows that made access difficult and sampling hazardous.
Sampling of adult squawfish was conducted during the spawning
period, on August 2-5, in Yampa Canyon (RMI 8.7-19.3) and shortly
following spawning, on August 14-16, at Juniper Springs
(RMI 90.5-93.5), Maybell (RMI 78.7-79.5), Sunbeam (RMI 64.7-71.7),
Lilly Park (RMI 53.1-53.4) and Government Bridge (RMI 94.3-98.1).
Fall (baseflow) monitoring was conducted October 6-9 at Lilly Park
(RMI 51-53.6), Sunbeam (RMI 70.9-73.6), Maybell (RMI 77.6-79.3),
Juniper Springs (RMI 90.8-93.5), and Morgan Gulch-Horse Gulch
(RMI 103.4-108.4). In 1984, habitat monitoring was conducted
concurrently during special site sampling on the Yampa River.
