24

historic criteria from 200 to 600 cfs during the 4 month boating season

and would involve the maintenance of a minimum stream flow in the 29-mile

reach that was 300 cfs greater than that has been proposed for the trout

fishery. In those years when Blue Mesa releases are made in the model to

protect minimum stream flows at Westwater for endangered fishes, however,

the total release for fishery purposes (700 cfsl would exceed the proposed

minimum for boating purposes.

K. Gunnison Tunnel Diversion Patterns

The capacity of the Gunnison Tunnel was assumed to be 1,122 cfs in

one study scenario and 1300 cfs in aYlother. Because diversions to the

Gunnison Tunnel for irrigation exhibit great variability from month to

month and year to year, they were modelled according to actual diversions

for the period of record. In one scenario, these historical diversions

were factored upward in an amount proportioYlal to the increased tunnel

capacity under the assumption that the increased capacity of the Gunnison

Tunnel will be used for irrigation diversions.

(See Appendix B.l

The diversions through the Gunnison Tunnel for the purpose of

hydropower generation were assumed to use all of the excess capacity of

the Tunnel for diversions in priority up to a maximum of 900 cfs.

L.
