release for fishery purposes in August and September would be 700 cfs <200

cfs - historic; 100 cfs - cold and warm fishes; 400 cfs - warm fish).

The preliminary data on the release requirement for endangered fish

does not display the years during the study period in which a 500 cfs

release in August and September must be made. Because the disaggregated

data were not available arid because of the preliminary nature of these

data, it was assumed for the purposes of this study that the 500 cfs

release in August and September for endangered fishes would be made in

those dry years of the study period with flow exceedance probabilities

between 80~ and 90%. The assumption is that Blue Mesa storage releases

would not be made for endangered fish purposes in the 90~ or greater

exceedance years or drier years. It is not clear, however, whether the

proposal to maintain the 2000 cfs at Westwater in 9 years out of 10

assumes that nQ storage releases would be made in 90% exceedance years, or

that releases would still be made in such years, but would not be

increased over historic levels by more than 500 cfs during August and

September even though the flow at Westwater with the release fell below
2000 cfs.

J. Boating Flows

A minimum stream flow of 600 cfs from June to September for boating

purposes in the 29-mile reach has been proposed. The protection of such a

minimum stream flow with Blue Mesa storage releases would increase the

WBLA, Inc. 1909 Broadway, #3, Boulder, Colorado 80302

23
