In this alternative FRICO wouid clean the existing 44
inch steel lined sections and install a 40 inch slip line steel section of conduit inside of the existing 44 inch
sections. This work would be done without draining the reservoir. Without the reservoir drained, the
work would be done with hydrostatic pressures on the outlet works and limited fresh air supply into the
work space. The existing leaking upstream gates would also result in needing to complete this work in a
wet environment. The 40 inch section would need to be assembled outside of the outlet works and
installed as a completed system as welding in the interior of the pipe is not practical given air and water
conditions. As a result FRICO would not be able to remove the existing 44 inch pipes but would instead
proceed with this, less desirable fix. The annular space between the existing 44 inch line and the new 40
inch steel sleeves would be grouted and the upstream and downstream extents of the new lined section
would be tied into the cast iron pipe.
12
