III. REASUNS WHY AMTCI PARTICIPATION IS DESIRABLE
Recreation and tourism represent one of the biggest and fastest growing i:ndustries in
Colorado, and i:he money generated from those businesses, both directly and indirectly, is critical
to the long-terrn economic health of the region and the state. Now more thanL evc:r recreational
activities are a mainstay of the state economy - and water rights for such activities are just as
important as ri;;hts for more traditional uses. The Recreation Amici reflect the diversity of the
interests comn;.itted to protecting the recreational use of Colorado's water. The Jplecreation
Amici represerit or are responding to the tremendous interest in recreational boal:ing in Colorado,
and the opportianities for economic development that interest has created. Tflie Recreation Amici
• wilI assist the Court in understanding the ramifications and negative impacts that will result from
the limitations on recreation rights urged by the State and the State Amici. In short, Recreation
Amici seek to support Upper Gunnison in this appeal and will assist the Court iri understanding
how the ruling sought by the State and State Amici would be a dramatic departure from existing
law and would seriously harm Colorado's recreation economy.
The Recreation Amici are able and willing to meet the briefing schedule applicable to
Upper Gunnison so that no delay or inconvenience will be caused by their partic;ipation.
Where:Fore, the Recreation Amici listed above respectfully request leave to file the amici
curiae brief conditionally filed herewith.
Tm1639 -8-
