Table 2. Release Priorities for the Environmental Account for the Water Year 2007 (The rwo pulse flow periods are s/zaded.)
March 23 - May 10* 2,400 whooping crane, fish community, piping Medium/Low With similar 2004 to 2006 gains during this time
2,400 plover, least tem, sandhill crane period, projected flows indicate dry year targets will
1,700 not be met. A medium/low priority is given to
maintaining adequate base flows during this important
time period, if necessary, for spring crane migration.
May 1- June 30* 10-year running The principal affected resources are river and LOW This second pulse/peak period of the bi-modal historic
average of 30- riparian wetland processes such as Platte River hydrograph was physically and
day exceedance maintaining channel morphology; sediment biologically significant for maintaining and creating
for 3,400 cfs, supply; sandbar formation; nutrient cycling; native species habitats. Historically, frequent peak
and 5-day backwater habitats; groundwater recharge; flows occurred during this period prirnarily due to
exceedance of and behavioral cues far fish spawning; melting mountain snowpack. Currently, operarional
8,300-10,500 cfs reproduction, movement, and redistribution. and biologic constraints come into play during this late
spring pulse/peak time period which make EA pulse
flow implementation more difficult. At this time, the
Service does not plan to pursue implementation of EA
pulse flows in May or June. Until information
indicates otherwise, this time period is given a low
priority for EA pulse flow implementation.
May 11 - Sept 15* 1,200 fish community, least tern Low Based on recent drought conditions, extreme shortages
1,200 will again occur during much of this time period.
800 Unless hydrological conditions improve in the basin
making effective summer flow augmentation possible,
a low priority is given to augmenting extremely low
flows during this time period.
Sept 16 - Sept 30 1,000 fish community Low Based on recent drought conditions, zero to very low
1,000 flow conditions could again occur during this time
600 period. Because EA water may be limited and terns and
plovers have migrated out of the area by this time, a
lower priority is given. If river flows recover by this
time, lower ambient temperatures and decreasing
irrigation demand should result in improving river
conditions for the fish community.
Water Year 2007 EA AOP 10 January 19, 2007
