DRAFT Preliminary Water Demand Forecasts
• Tabl.e 2 indicates that Projected M&I demands for 2030 are projected to increase in
each of the eight major river basins in Colorado. The Colorado and Dolores/San
Juan/Miguel Basins are projected to have the greatest increase, while the North Platte
and Rio Grande will have the least. Total M&I and self-supplied water demand is
projected to increase by over 700,000 acre-feet (AF) per year by the year 2030, with
ovei• 575,000 AF of this demand in the South Platte and Arkansas Basins.
Table 2 Prelimina S tatewide M&I Dem and Pro'ections*
Estimated • . - -. Crop irrigation water requirements were estimated for these particular basins
using the irrigated acreage and crop types with the climate data and appropriate
water balance models within the StateCU model. Using CDSS tools, the crop
requirements at diversion structures were summed to calculate a total annual
irrigation water requirement by basin or region. Total crop consumptive use on an
annual basis by basin was determined by summing a supply limited crop
consumptive use amount based upon historic diversions and soil moisture carryover
at ea.ch diversion structure.
A different approach is required for the non-CDSS North Platte, South Platte, and
? Arkansas Basins to estimate crop irrigation water requirements. Existing sources and
studies have been used to compile information on irrigated acreage and cropping
??? ?
S:\MEETINGS\CYVCB BOARD\PRELIMINARV DEMAND SUMMARY MEMO TO CWCB 1-20-04 REV.DOC
