Inventory and Field Reconnaissance I
In addition to field notes, photographs were taken during both the aerial reconnaissance and the
site visits.
Notes from observations made during both field reconnaissance efforts were
subsequently recorded onto standard forms to permit more convenient description, comparison
and evaluation of information pertaining to diversion structures. Sketches of several structures
which received extended site visits accompany the narratives. These forms are contained in
Appendix F. Photographs of selected structures (chosen to display the nature and range of
"typical" structures) are contained in Appendix E.
It should be noted that these descriptions and evaluations of diversion structures are
premised on the assumption that the observations made (and confirmed in interviews with
owner/operators) are representative of the past and future nature of those structures; in other
words, that observers visiting the structures at a similar time in any other year would see
similar features. It should also be noted that no attempt was made to describe or evaluate any
other aspects of the delivery systems (e.g., headgates, measuring devices, etc.) associated with t
the structures examined.
DETAILED SITE SURVEYS
As the August 1994 site visits were being carried out, it became apparent that the
extremely low flow conditions of late summer 1994 presented a unique opportunity to obtain
detailed site surveys of diversion structures. Because of the low water, such surveys could,
describe the topography of the structures and the adjacent riverbed with sufficient accuracy to
support preliminary design work (though no such design work was anticipated for the present
study).
After some discussion, it was determined that study resources would support detailed site
surveys of the Maybell and K. Diamond/Patrick Sweeney diversion structures. These two
structures are permanent obstructions lying within designated critical habitat. A local surveyor
was contracted to carry out these surveys in early October. The resulting site survey maps are
contained in Appendix G.
11

u

2-6
