~~-
~ j
Introduction
Razorback suckers (Xyrauchen texan~is) were transferred from Lake Mohave
and arrived on the RDU on January 16, 1981. The fish arrived in an overall
fair to good condition. Five fish were in bad condition, 28 fish had large
areas of thick white mucous on body and caudal peduncle. The 136 fish were
placed in eight tanks and treated with 1:6000 formalin for one hour to re-
move external parasites. Most of the males were fluid. Many of t}~e females
flowed a few eggs during the unloading process. Fish remained in tanks for
24 hours before being stocked in ponds or spawned in tanks. Twenty fish
were held in the holding house for spawning and 15 fish were held in a hold-
ing house tank to be treated for the heavy mucous spots on tt~e body.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
Pond Spawning
Two 0.1 surface acre ponds were prepared by placing about six yards of
rock, ranging in size -from ~" to 3" diameter, in one corner area of each pond
covering an area about 15' x 15'. When ponds were filled to normal level the
water depth over the racks ranged from 1.5 to 3 feet deep. The water temper-
ature was 60±1oF and the ponds were about one-third full when fish were stocked
on the day following arrival. The ponds were full within 48 hours after stock-
ing. Pond C6 received 26 females and 24 males, whereas C5 received 26 females
and 23 males. Fish were added to Pond C5 after they had been utilized in tank
spawning and stripping, also stocked were those treated for disease. Obser-
vations of the rock areas were periodically made to ascertain spawning activi-
ty.
1
