~ ~
' piling of eggs made this technique less than optimum. A tctal of 1,315 fry
were obtained from this female. Additional injections yielded only nonviable
eggs.
Female ~3 and 4 - These two females received 300 and 500 IU respectively
and lathough each yielded a few eggs every day or two there were no viable
eggs.
Injections of 2 to 8 mg carp pituitary injected every other day into
four females gave no results.
Four females that were seined from the pond. One was injected with 2 mg
carp pituitary/lb. daily, and after four injections the female died before
any-eggs were ovulated. One female was used in the circular tank spawning
test. The two remaining females were injected with 300 IU and 500 IU inter-
muscularly daily for two days and the third day injected with the same dosage
rate but in the body cavity. These two females were ripe and running eggs on
the morning of the fourth day. Eggs were not enumerated to reduce handling.
Estimated numbers were 60,000 eggs each. Eggs were placed in trays in a
Heath incubator. A total of 28,500 swim-up fry was obtained from these two
females. All eggs water hardened but two and three day old egg samples showed
that 32X were developing. Fungus in the incubator reduced the number of fry
obtained.
Egg Measurements
Eggs were enumberated using Von Bayer's method. Egg counts were made
from both water hardened eggs and non-water hardened eggs. The eggs from
the females during the first part of the spawning tests were of various
stages. In some instances over 50y of the eggs would 'absorb no water. The
data presented here will be from lots of eggs that all had water hardened.
The data from non-water hardened eggs will not be presented due to the
11
