the Mathcad modeling software, we rewrote the original model using the Quattro Pro
(Version 7 for Windows 95 using PC computers) platform. The mathematical formulas
and logical flow were programmed exactly as in the original model. Input parameters
are entered from the `A' folder of the model by changing the properties associated with
the 'run' button. For a further description of the model mechanics, see Appendix 2.
MODEL CALIBRATION
The model was calibrated to existing estimates of Colorado squawfish abundance. The
only estimates were for adult Colorado squawfish abundance and were generated from
mark-recapture estimates in the Colorado River arm of the upper Colorado River Basin
(Osmundson and Burnham 1996). Estimates of abundances for the entire basin are
more applicable for our purposes and though data exists for mark-recapture estimate
for the whole basin, these estimates had not been made to date. Therefore, we
incorporated athree-step process to calibrate the model. First, we used Osmundson
and Bumham (1996) Colorado River data base to determine if we could adequately
model those observed dynamics. Second, we used the tagging data base and, using
mark-recapture models, estimated the total adult squawfish population for the entire
upper basin. Finally, given the adult population estimated for the Colorado River
subpopulation, we recalculated the Upper Basin estimate for an upper subpopulation
(those fish that spawn in the Yampa) and a lower Green River subpopulation (near
12
