., 1 ' <br />basin water diversions and major dams dating back as early as the <br />Strawberry Dam in 1912. The last of these projects, Starvation <br />Reservoir, was completed in 1969 further impacting river flows <br />below the Duchesne-Strawberry River confluence. <br />Endangered fishes research conducted throughout the 1980's on the <br />Yampa, Green, and White rivers has resulted in a much improved <br />understanding of the biological needs of these native fishes. The <br />operation of Flaming Gorge Reservoir has been a key consideration <br />as seasonal instream-flow recommendations for endangered fishes <br />have been developed for the mainstem Green River. An in-depth <br />analysis of the contributions of Green -River tributaries in <br />providing for these recommended flow regimes has recently been <br />undertaken. The Duchesne River has the potential to be a <br />significant contributor of flows to the Green River below Ouray. <br />Fisheries studies on the lower reaches of the Duchesne River have <br />been limited in number and scope. Creel reports (Utah Division of <br />Wildlife Resources unpublished reports), electrofishing (UDWR <br />unpublished data), chemical sampling (Mullan 1976) and, in at least <br />one instance, dynamite (Mullan 1976) have been used to survey fish <br />populations on the Duchesne River. The presence of Colorado <br />squawfish in the Duchesne River has been documented as far upstream <br />as Bridgeland, Utah approximately 49 miles above the Green River <br />(UDWR unpublished data).
