., 1 '
basin water diversions and major dams dating back as early as the
Strawberry Dam in 1912. The last of these projects, Starvation
Reservoir, was completed in 1969 further impacting river flows
below the Duchesne-Strawberry River confluence.
Endangered fishes research conducted throughout the 1980's on the
Yampa, Green, and White rivers has resulted in a much improved
understanding of the biological needs of these native fishes. The
operation of Flaming Gorge Reservoir has been a key consideration
as seasonal instream-flow recommendations for endangered fishes
have been developed for the mainstem Green River. An in-depth
analysis of the contributions of Green -River tributaries in
providing for these recommended flow regimes has recently been
undertaken. The Duchesne River has the potential to be a
significant contributor of flows to the Green River below Ouray.
Fisheries studies on the lower reaches of the Duchesne River have
been limited in number and scope. Creel reports (Utah Division of
Wildlife Resources unpublished reports), electrofishing (UDWR
unpublished data), chemical sampling (Mullan 1976) and, in at least
one instance, dynamite (Mullan 1976) have been used to survey fish
populations on the Duchesne River. The presence of Colorado
squawfish in the Duchesne River has been documented as far upstream
as Bridgeland, Utah approximately 49 miles above the Green River
(UDWR unpublished data). Biologists conducting studies on the
adjacent Green River over the past decade have documented a
2
