O'Brien (1993) concluded that flows of approximately 14,000
cfs would be required to produce overbank flows into the wetlands
if the dike was removed. Figure 4 provides data on flows above
15,000 cfs which should predict the number of days with overbank
flow conditions that could potentially occur in the study area.
Prior to 1963 flows that could produce flooding conditions for at
least 10 days could have occurred every 1.6 years, and many years
in a row would have flooding. Since 1963 the return interval of
this magnitude flow has been 2.4 years. The Yampa River itself
produces flows of 15,000 cfs regularly, thus flows in a larger
river such as the Green, would be expected to be 20,000 cfs or
more to perform enough work to modify stream channels and provide
habitat conditions for native riparian plant species
establishment.
GREEN RIVER AT JENSEN
DAYS OVER 15, 000 CFS
70
60
50
N
}
Q
Q 40
li
0
Q'
W 30
Z
20
to
1917 1952 - 1957 1962 1967 1972 1977 1982 1987 1992
WATER YEAR
Figure 4.
