Densi estimates <br />Density estimates are presented in numbers per square meter or per cubic meter. <br />Plankton density estimates for the plankton were calculated using the measured depth <br />of each tow and the net opening to determine the volume of water sampled during <br />each tow. Numbers of plankton/liter were determined and converted to densities/m3. <br />Since, one objective of this study was to compare the benthos and the plankton this <br />necessitated a standard scale. Plankton densities were converted from m3 to m2. This <br />was done by taking the average depth of the five plankton tows and multiplying that <br />fraction of a meter by the average densities/m3. This allows the square meter of <br />benthos and the plankton in the water column above that square meter to be <br />compared. <br />Ninety five percent confidence intervals for life stages of copepods and <br />cladocerans were calculated according to Elliot (1977); (Table 4.). If some samples <br />for a site contained zeros, a log(x+1) transformation was used otherwise a log x <br />transformation was used. <br />10 <br />
