and preserved with five percent formalin with rose bengal stain added to facilitate <br />later sorting. <br />Water chemistry <br />Water chemistry was recorded at each study site during the sample period (Table <br />2.). Three replicates were taken at each site. During each monthly sample period <br />min-max thermometers were placed at the benthos-water interface and left for <br />approximately 10 days. The thermometers were then retrieved and min-max <br />temperatures recorded in degrees Celsius. Hardness and alkalinity were measured <br />using a Hach kit and reported in grains per gallon as calcium carbonate. In June pH <br />was measured with a Hach kit and in July .and August with a Markson meter and <br />electrode. Redox was also measured in July and August with the Markson meter and a <br />platinum electrode. Turbidity was measured in NTU's using a meter from Hach <br />Chemical Corp. <br />Laborator-y processing <br />Preserved samples were returned to the laboratory for processing. These were <br />washed using a 63-micron niter screen to eliminate silt and clay particles. The <br />remaining sample was then washed into a beaker, the beaker was filled with water, <br />stirred, and allowed to settle for 25 seconds. The water and suspended organisms <br />were decanted onto the screen. This process was repeated but with ten and zero <br />second settling intervals.
