A common element in upper Colorado River waters is selenium <br />derived from leaching from marine shale and other sediment in the <br />region. This element is reported to be toxic to many aquatic <br />organisms (SSSA 1989). In the study area, only one sample <br />contained detectable concentrations (>2ug L-1) of Se, this being <br />station L-1, a ground water sample from a cottonwood riparian <br />forest (see Figure 1 for the location of L-1). Samples had below <br />detection limit Se in all surface waters. <br />19 <br />
