Our analysis of water levels did not begin until mid-June
and our data is used along with data from Figure 10 to estimate
water elevations at Old Charlie and Wyasket Lake in mid to late
summer. From mid-June through September the Green River and Old
Charlie dropped very similarly. However, Wyasket Lake dropped
very slowly and it appears that it may retain water through the
winter of 1993-1994. This indicates that in their natural
condition these bottoms can hold water for very long periods of
time following the retreat of flood waters. A year with flooding
for long duration, say 4 to 6 weeks, followed by continued high
flows of say 10,000 cfs for another 2 to 4 weeks would most
likely keep water levels in the bottoms high enough to allow them
to go through the winter nearly full. Under these conditions
they would not freeze to the bottom, and most likely would
contain sufficient oxygen to keep fish alive.
17
