New Mexico: McKinley, Rio Arriba, and San Juan Counties <br />' Although the San Juan does not flow through <br />any portion of McKinley County, 22,682 of the <br />1 county's residents live within the Navajo Reservation which receives a significant amount of San <br />Juan River water. In 1990 the county's population was 60,686, an increase of just seven percent <br />over 1980 levels. Of the 38,004 residents not living on Navajo lands, the majority live in the city <br />of Gallup. There are 20,933 housing units with an average household size of 3.61. <br />Rio Arriba county, population 34,365, is located in north-central New Mexico. It experienced a <br />growth of sixteen percent between 1980 and 1990. The county's major population center is the <br />city of Espanola. Of the population, 2,356 live on the Jicarilla Apache reservation, and 73 reside <br />on Navajo Reservation Trust lands. Rio Arriba has 14,357 housing units with an average of 2.97 <br />inhabitants. <br />Of San Juan County's 91,605 residents, 23,742 live on Navajo reservation lands. The county <br />grew twelve percent in the decade between 1980 and 1990. The cities of Farmington, Aztec, and <br />Shiprock contain the majority of the population. Shiprock is the largest Navajo community in <br />the Navajo Nation. <br />4. <br />Utah: San Juan County <br />San Juan County, Utah is located on the Colorado Plateau in the extreme southeastern corner of <br />the state. It is the largest county in the state and one of the largest in the United States. The <br />county covers 8,103 square miles or 5,186,075 acres of high desert, sandstone canyons, and <br />timbered mountains. The Colorado River forms most of the western boundary of San Juan <br />County; the remainder is formed by the Green River, a tributary of the Colorado. The eastern <br />border is formed by the Utah/Colorado state line and the southern by the Utah/Arizona state line. <br />' On the north San Juan County abuts Grand County. The population of 12,759 includes 5,272 <br />residents on the Navajo Reservation and 246 on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation. Each of the <br />county's housing units has an average of 3.7 inhabitants. <br />t1
