Approximately thirty percent of the population is under eighteen years of age and twelve percent are over sixty-five. There are 3,951 household units, each with an average of 2.66 occupants. ' In 1990, the population in La Plata County had grown to 32.284, an increase of seventeen percent over 1980. The majority of this population lives in the city of Durango. Twenty-five ' percent of the population is between the ages of five and seventeen, while only ten percent is over sixty-five. Of the total county population, 1,017 live on the Southern Ute reservation in La Plata county. The total number of households is 15,412, with an average of 2.56 occupants. ' Montezuma County is located in the extreme southwestern corner of Colorado and has 18,672 residents, an increase of eight percent over 1980. The majority of the population live in the ' communities of Cortez, Mancos, and Dolores. Of the total population, 1,053 live on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation. There are an average of 2.74 persons living in 8,050 housing units. 10
