Hypotheses formulated are tested within the framework of the six
research and recovery elements identified in the Recovery
Implementation Program. These elements describe the basic
categories of investigation upon which much of the future research
and recovery activities will be based. They include:
1. Essential research for long range plan and program goal
development,
2. Protection of genetic integrity and management and
augmentation of populations,
3. Protection, management, and augmentation of habitat,
4. Water quality protection and enhancement,
5. Interactions between native and nonnative fish species,
and
6. Monitoring and data management
Research activities planned under the various elements will span
the entire seven year research period. Individual studies are
programmed for a discrete period based on proposals submitted to
and reviewed by the interdisciplinary team guiding the Research
Plan. Studies, however, will also be evaluated on a yearly basis
to determine if objectives are being met and changes are needed.
Additional studies will be proposed as current research matures and
provides the information necessary to refine specific hypotheses.
At the end of the Research Program, an integrated final report will
present information on the biological and physical findings.
Emphasis will be placed upon determining response by the fish
community and river channel (habitat) to reservoir-controlled
releases designed to mimic the natural hydrograph. Recommendations
will be formulated for re-operation of Navajo Reservoir that
include flows to benefit the native fish community, particularly
Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker.
Accurate data compilation and overall database management are
important components of the Research Plan. Data management needs
that are required for the integrated analysis of data and findings
from all research segments have developed as part of the overall
Program. Standardized formats and computerized software were
established to ensure cross-research segment referencing. The
Service acted as a repository for data collected and entered by
individual researchers and performed data entry functions as
needed. Species nomenclature has also been standardized to ensure
accurate reporting for individual species data (Table 1).
5
