M~th~ds
Stocking of Colorado squawfish was by Dexter National Fish
Hatchery (DNFH) and AGFD personnel. All squawfish were produced
by DNFH except for a portion of those stocked by AGFD, which were
reared from fry produced at Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery
in 1981. Transportation of squawfish to stocking sites was by
hatchery truck in untreated, hatchery well-water. If
temperatures at stocking sites differed significantly from
hauling water, tempering was accomplished by bucketing river
water into the hauling tanks to acclimate fish. Stocking was by
hand carried buckets and via tank tube. Small squawfish (15-1`l5
mm Total Length [TL]) were placed in quiet backwaters or areas
with little current. Larger fish were generally stocked directly
into the main current in medium velocity runs and in pools.
Monitoring of stocked squawfish was by trammel netting and
seining in close proximity to stocking sites.
Results
Colorado squawfish were stocked into six locations on the
Salt and Verde rivers (Table 1, Fig. 1). More than 96,000
fingerling and 442 larger (355-405 mm x TL) squawfish were
stocked August through October 1985.
Initial monitoring consisted of a field trip 3-4 September
1985 on the Verde River at Perkinsville (No. 5, Fig.~l). Over-
night trammel netting at this stocking site collected 7 Colorado
squawfish (x TL 333 ± 15 mm, 312-358; x WT ,,253 ± 48 g, 195-350)
from the 26 August 1985 stocking (x TL 355 mm) as well as
-4-
