Five attempts at spawning one female with one to two males 8-13 May,
produced an estimated 9500 eggs (Table 2). Lanigan (1987) reports that about
4500 eggs were fertilized (47.9% fertility ?). Personal communication with
Toney again suggests that Lanigan's numbers may be erroneous. Records indicate
that eggs were collected and fertilized in the field on 11 and 13 May. All
eggs produced 8-13 May were incubated outdoors in a Heath incubator at water
temperatures of 16-210C. Water at a rate of 2.0 gpm was recirculated from a
300 gallon fiberglass tank. Apparently a problem with fungus again hampered
incubation. The eggs were treated daily with the fungicide malachite green at
a concentration of 2.2 ppm. The fungicide treatment was successful in
preventing egg fungus in the outdoor incubator. Records indicate that the eggs
later finished incubation in a earthen pond (pond #1 ?) at water temperatures
of 16-210C. A problem with fungus did not reoccur in the pond. Approximately
3,189 fry hatched from this group of eggs (71% hatch ?). These fry hatched in
7-8 days and were placed in holding tanks. Thus, a total of 3,299 fry hatched
during 1987 (16.9% overall hatch ?).
POND REARING
Between 16-29 May, 2,894 fry were hand counted to pond #1. Water
temperatures varied during this period from 17-200C. In addition,
approximately 399 fry were placed in a 300 gallon fiberglass tank outdoors.
This tank was saturated with plankton obtained from pond #3, and the fry were
also fed a commercial starting diet (Kyowa A-400). It is not known exactly how
much of the starting diet was fed to the fry (no records). Six fish from the
original 3,299 fry are unaccounted for and presumed lost due to mortality.
During the first week of July, 360 fry were transferred from the outdoor tank
to pond #3 (90.2% survivability). Apparently no sample counts of weights or
sizes were made. The fish were held in ponds #1 and #3 until 28 October
