through 4 November when the water level was lowered,
measurements of size and weight were made. During t'
the ponds, water temperatures varied between 11-240C
into either 10 or 20 mm size classes, and weighed in
individual weights and sizes were also recorded.
A total of 2,766 fish were removed from pond #1
the fish were removed, and
he fishes confinement in
The fish were placed
lots of 17-242 fish. Some
(95.6% survivability).
These fish ranged in size from 49 mm to 180 mm TL (Figure 1), and samples
totaling 1,762 fish weighed a total of 23,374 grams (13.3 g/fish). Twenty-nine
of these fish were preserved for morphometric analysis, and the remaining
2,737 fish were placed in holding tanks.
A total of 263 fish were removed from pond #3 (73% survivability). These
fish ranged in size from 91 mm to 205 mm TL (Figure 2), and samples totaling
185 fish weighed 6,827 grams (36.9 g/fish). Four fish were preserved for
morphometric analysis, and the remaining 259 fish were placed in holding tanks.
Thus, a total of 2,996 pond #1 and #3 fish were held in separate holding
tanks. Figure 3 is a comparison of the differences in sizes between pond #1
and pond #3 fish. The differences in sizes is presumably due to the original
stocking densities of the ponds.
A simple experiment was conceived to determine whether fish indoors in
fiberglass tanks, or fish held outdoors in an earthen pond would overwinter
better (grow, survive). An attempt was made to evenly distribute the fish
removed from ponds #1 and #3 into either the indoor tanks or pond #2. On 5
November, alternating net fulls of fish were removed from the holding tanks by
hand held landing nets. The first net full of fish was designated as pond #2
fish, and the next net full of fish was designated as tank fish. A total of
1,425 fish were transferred to pond #2, and the remaining 1,571 fish were
distributed between tanks #1 and #2.
