Between 16-18 May 1988, all fish that were held in tanks #2, #3, and #4,
were transferred to pond #1, a total of 2,462 fish. The fish were confined in
pond #1 until 1-3 September 1988, when the water level was dropped, the fish
were removed, and individual lengths and weights were recorded. During this
time period, water temperatures in pond #1 varied from 20-250C, and dissolved
oxygen levels ranged between 5.5-110C. In addition to the plant and animal
material in the pond available as food, the fish were also fed a total of
15,876 grams of commercial trout diet.
A total of 653 fish were removed from pond #1 (26.5% survivability).
These fish ranged in size from 100 mm to 271 mm TL (Figure 7), with a mean TL
of 156 mm, and weighed a total of 23,756 grams (36.4 g/fish). All fish were
weighed, measured, and also fin-clipped. Fin-clipping involved removing the
right pelvic fin at it's insertion with the body of the fish, using heavy duty
cuticle clippers or sewing scissors. No antibiotic solutions or anesthesia
were utilized. Thirty-six of these fish were sent to W.L. Minckley at Arizona
State University for morphological, DNA, and electrophoretic studies. The
remaining 617 fish were eventually stocked in the Green River during September
1988.
STOCKING
A total of 617 fin-clipped razorback suckers (from pond #1) were stocked
into the Green River between 8-23 September 1988 (Table 6). These fish were
transported from Ouray NWR to Red Wash boat ramp (RMI 298.0). The ramp is
located six miles south of Hwy. 40, off Hwy 264, east of the town of Jensen,
Utah. On 8 September, 200 fish were stocked into backwater habitats at RMI
295.5, RMI 297.0, RMI 297.5, and RMI 297.7. The backwater at RMI 295.5 was
aborted after 8 September due to the difficulty in traversing the numerous
sandbars near its location. On 9 September, 210 fish were stocked into
