Status of LCRB Gila robusta
is also reviewed by Voeltz (2002}, who presents a more detailed synopsis of taxonomic
designations.
T~onomy--Gila robusta (Baird and Girard) was described in 1$53 from
specimens gathered from the Zuni River, New Mexico (Baird and Girard 1853b).
Additional descriptions (listed below) were synonymized to Gila robusta by various
authors:
Gila elegans (Baird and Girard 1853b). Synonmized by Ellis (1914).
Subsequently listed as a subspecies by Miller (1946) and then upgraded
back to full species by Holden (1968) and Holden and Stalnaker (1970).
G. gracilis (Baird and Girard 1853b). Synonymized by Jordan and
Evermann (1896).
G. grahami (Baird. and Girard 1853a). Synonymized by Jordan and Evermann
(1896). Designated as subspecies (G. r. grahami) by Rinne and
Hinckley (1970). DeMarais (1986) questioned the taxonomic validity of
G. r. grahami and more recently Hinckley and DeMarais (2000)
suggested elevating grahami to specific status, as Gila nigra.
G. robusta (Baird and Girard 1853b). Additionally designated as a subspecies (G.
r. robusta) by Miller (1946).
G. intermedia (Baird and Girard 1854). Placed as subspecies by Miller (1946)
and subsequently upgraded to full species by Rinne (1976).
Prychocheilus vorax (Girard 1856). Synonymized by Jordan and Gilbert (18$3).
G. af~inis (Abbot 1860). Synonymized by Jordan and Evermann (1896).
Leuciscus grahami (Gunther 1868 as cited in Holden and Stalnaker 1970).
Synonymized by Jordan and Evermann (1896).
L. robustus (Gunther 186$ as cited in Holden and Stalnaker 1970}. Synonymized
by Jordan and Evermann (1896).
L. zunnensis (Gunther 1868 as cited in Holden and Stalnaker 1970).
Synonymized by Jordan and Evermann (1896).
G. nacrea (Cope 1872). Synonymized by Jordan and Evermann (1896).
G. egregca (Cope and Yarrow 1875). Synonymized by Ellis
(1914).
G. paradara (Cope and Yarrow 1875). Synonymized by Ellis (1914).
G. seminude (Cope and Yarrow 1875). Placed as a subspecies of G. robusta (G.
r. seminude) by Ellis (1914j, and subsequently upgraded back to species
status by DeMarais et al. (1992).
Gila robusta subspecies currently recognized include robusta (Miller 1946) and jordani
(Tanner 1950, Douglas et al, 1989).
