ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
My family, wife Heidi and daughter Kaitlind, provided the enormous emotional
and logistical support required to complete this dissertation. Their love and help, through
what must have seemed an endless task, will always be remembered. My parents Ted
and JoAnn, and in-laws Bob and Marg Tillquist, are thanked for their interest and
willingness to help.
I thank committee members Drs. David Anderson, Brett Johnson, Will Clements,
Boris Kondratieff, R. Muth, and James Ward, who challenged me to excel and expand my
capabilities beyond what I thought was possible. David Anderson and Dr. Gary White
patiently demonstrated, through formal and informal instruction, the power of appropriate
experimental designs and quantitative analysis techniques to allow strong scientific
inference.
When I began this degree I was naive to the committment and energy that a
responsible major professor makes to your educational program. Dr. Kurt Fausch
accepted me into a Ph.D. program knowing that I would not be able to provide him much,
if any, support for his involvement. Nevertheless, he tirelessly and quickly read drafts of
proposals and chapters, and provided sound personal, professional, and scientific advice.
I have learned much from him and will remember his unselfish and professional example
throughout my career.
Friends on the LFL staff ,including Robert Muth, Darrel Snyder, John Hawkins,
and Dan Beyers provided a supportive and interactive environment in which to work on
this dissertation. Dan Beyers patiently read each of the difficult first drafts of each
chapter.
viii
